the detox scam

the detox scam

Next post Previous post

When “flushing toxins” really means selling laxatives and diuretics.

what they do

The promise is always the same; “Rid your body of toxins.",  “Reset your metabolism in 3 days”, “Flatten your stomach and feel lighter.”

The products change – teas, powders, juices, pills, “3-day reset” boxes – but the playbook doesn’t:

Dress it up as “detox”. Talk about “toxic buildup,” “sluggish liver,” “blocked colon,” and “stored waste” with zero actual measurements or definitions.

Use old-school tricks.

Most “detox”/“drain” products are just combinations of:

✖️ Laxatives (to make you poop more)

✖️ Diuretics (to make you pee out water)

✖️ Stimulants (to make you feel something)

Hijack normal physiology.

They take; Normal water loss, Normal bowel movements, Normal fluctuations on the scale …and rebrand it as “toxins leaving your body.”

The reality is your liver, kidneys, lungs, gut, and skin handle detox 24/7. They don’t clock in when you buy a tea.

why they do it

Quick wins sell better than boring truths.

“Eat better, sleep more, move consistently” is the answer nobody wants to hear.

“Drink this tea and erase your bad week in 72 hours” is an easy sell. Short-term water loss and an emptier gut mean; The scale drops fast, Your stomach feels flatter, You feel “cleaner” (because you’ve been in the bathroom all day)

That short-term change keeps people coming back, even if nothing long-term improved.

Vague “toxins” = unbeatable marketing shield.

Ask a detox brand: “Which toxins? How are you measuring them? What changes after the detox?” You’ll get hand-wavy answers; “Environmental toxins”, “Built-up waste”, “Chemicals from processed food.”

Nothing you can actually test before and after. If it can’t be measured, it can’t be held accountable.

Cheap ingredients, premium prices.

Herbal laxatives, diuretics, and flavourings are cheap. Package them in a sleek box, add a “protocol” booklet, and suddenly it’s a“3-day reset system” or  a “7-day total body drain”.

Premium price. Cost to make. Not so much.

Repeat business through rebound

Extreme restriction + water loss often leads to; Rebound hunger, Binge patterns, Weight regain. Which sets you up perfectly for the next “reset” cycle.

how to spot it

Look for vague “toxin” language. Red flags; “Draws out toxins”, “Flushes impurities”, “Cleanses your organs”, “Resets your metabolism”.

If they can’t tell you what toxin, what level, and what changes, it’s storytelling, not science.

Check the ingredient list for old-school tricks

Common suspects:

✖️ Senna, cascara, aloe latex  laxatives

✖️ Dandelion, juniper, nettle, uva ursi  diuretic effect

✖️ High caffeine, guarana, yerba mate  stimulants

None of these “detox” your organs. They mostly; Make you poop more, Make you pee more, Make you feel wired …so you think something dramatic is happening.

Extreme rules, tiny timeline

Watch for; Only juices/smoothies for 3–7 days, Almost zero protein, Instructions that sound like punishment, not nutrition.

If the plan is something you couldn’t live on for a month without falling apart, it’s not a health solution. It’s a crash.

Before/after pics based on bloat & posture

The classic trick; Day 1: bad lighting, relaxed stomach, sad face, Day 3: good lighting, flexed, sucked-in, tanned, maybe even a different angle.

What changed? Less gut content. Less water. Better posing. No “deep cleanse of your organs.”

take it, or leave it..

one

Detox is a job, not a product. Your liver, kidneys, lungs, and gut are running detox 24/7.

What actually supports them; Enough water, A balanced diet with fibre, micronutrients, and adequate protein, Limiting chronic alcohol and smoking, Not living on ultra-processed junk.

No tea replaces that. No 3-day kit shortcuts (short-shits).

two

If it promises miracles in 3–7 days, think twice. Real health changes look like; Better energy, Better bloodwork, Better performance and body composition over weeks and months.

Not “down 3kg in 3 days” because you emptied your gut and glycogen.

three

Don’t confuse “feeling empty” with “being healthy”. Feeling lighter because; You’re under-eating, You’ve lost mostly water, Your bowels are constantly being flushed …is not the flex you think it is.

If a product has you living in the bathroom, that’s not detox. That’s stress.

four

Spend your money where it compounds. Instead of another “reset,” stop eating like a toddler. Quality protein. Real food you can stick to. Things that actually move the needle long-term.

final word

“Detox, drain, and reset” products sell a feeling of empty stomachs, quick scale drops, a sense of “starting over”, but they don’t cleanse your organs, don’t fix your metabolism, and don’t replace the work of eating, sleeping, and training like an adult.

Your body already has a detox system. What it needs from you isn’t a tea. It needs consistent respect.

Don’t pay premium prices to feel empty. Build habits that keep you strong.

Don't take my word for it.
Do your own research.
